Our guest speaker will be Wilson Yazzie was born and raised in Chilchinbeto, Az on the Navajo Reservation. He was moved away from home at the age of four to attend Indian Residential School. While trying to learn English, he was punished if he spoke the Navajo language.
After he graduated from Phoenix Indian high school, he joined the Marines and served two terms in Vietnam. Upon returning from Vietnam he worked at Chilchinbeto day school where he met his wife Lynne. They moved to Elk River, MN where they got married in June of 1969. He worked at Mainline Trophies for many years, where he excelled at engraving and building beautiful awards and trophies.
Wilson and Lynne adopted Wilson’s little brother, Mark, after their father passed away. Wilson then moved on to Northwester Bell telephone where he worked as a lineman. Their daughter, LaRee, was born during that time. He struggled with PTSD and alcoholism through it all and that caused him and his wife Lynne to separate for 3 years. After they reconciled he worked back at Mainline Trophies during the day and the Anoka school district as a custodian at night. Wilson’s granddaughter, Anneke, was born December 1st, 2000 and she gave him such great joy. It was a promise to her that led him to seek treatment of PTSD.
March of 2019, the Lord led Wilson back to Vietnam with the Christian humanitarian group, Vets with a Mission. When he left Vietnam all those years ago, it was a war torn country with so much suffering. This time he was able to go back with a group of doctors, nurses and Vietnam Veterans to help provide medical care for those in need. He had worried about the people of Vietnam for many years and to be able go back and help them, make friends with a General he once fought against, and attend a wonderful Easter service has helped to heal his soul and ease the PTSD symptoms. His mind is clear, he has less fear and paranoia and is more open and trusting of people. Wilson likes to keep busy and making and selling Navajo jewelry is his hobby.
